Q: Want to illustrate this childrens book I wrote? A: If you're going the self-publication route, please understand that I'm unable to work on spec. My illustration is time-consuming and my time, sadly, limited. That said, if you're looking to hire an illustrator, I'm an illustrator-for-hire: let's talk.
If you intend to send your manuscript to publishers, be aware that they do not expect illustration to accompany every submission and in general prefer to select the illustrator themselves. There are several reasons for this: it's the publisher's business to know what style of illustration will work best -- for the marketplace in general, for your type of story in particular, and for the publishing house's own image; they may want to pair a first-time writer with an established childrens book illustrator for name recognition; they'll also want to be the ones to set terms for the artist's involvement insofar as royalty, usage rights, etc.; and they may just prefer to work with an artist with whom they already have a relationship. That said, if you think my artwork would be perfect with your story, please feel free to refer your publisher to my site.
